Artwork Appreciation
Soul Landscape by WU Yi-Tze is series of everyday landscapes devoid of people.
In Soul Landscape – Paradise, Wu uses a meticulous realism from the vantage point of a building roof to depict scattered buildings in the distance, backlit by the dim dawning light.
Wu likes to fix his gaze on the backlight. For him the dim horizon behind the scene is like a road leading to the light. Wu unites the unease and contradictions one feels in life with the outer landscape and expresses this in his two-dimensional paintings, thereby hoping to find a spiritual anchor for his soul in the chaotic reality he finds himself in.
