Artwork Appreciation
PAI Yu-Lin’s The Form of a Dream transforms the emotional response and trauma experienced in her dreams into abstract geometric spaces within the composition. The painting has a gray background upon which geometric patches of different textures, color tones, sizes, and shapes are scattered. Some patches are filled with monotonous colors that are rich in texture, while some include splotches of red, black, and white. The different patches and brushwork represent different segments and emotional states of the artist’s dreams and serve as a bridge that connects actual living spaces, the environment, and her sub-conscious. By manifesting personal feelings and memories as abstract ideas within this composition, PAI Yu-Lin has successfully created an artwork that addresses her emotional state.
