Artwork Appreciation
LI Cheng-Hsun’s Coco, Cambon No. 31 is based upon the concept that many recent fashion trends were derived from art. The elegant atmosphere and innovative breakthroughs are both sought after by artists and fashion designers alike. The artist therefore used contrasting black and white colors to create graded layers. Gold is then introduced to further accentuate the contrast. The finished composition is an analogy that creative work in different fields, despite looking different, are actually similar when they do collide. Through the repeating actions of underpainting, pasting tapes, applying color, and removing tapes, neat and orderly lines were created. LI Cheng-Hsun’s works present a mechanical and rational order that hides within it a moving state of uncertainty. Painting is a method to record his daily emotions, conveying inner thoughts and feelings through a harmonic rhythm.
