In Between VII— Gateway

Artist Chen Hung-Chun often takes easily overlooked objects from everyday life as his subjects, and in his work In Between VII—Gateway he chose to depict the kind of iron rolling gate that can be seen everywhere on Taiwan’s streets. In Chen's thinking, every object is composed of abstract lines, so the rolling gate with wave-shaped slats, for example, is composed of many horizontal lines. In this painting, he piles layers of acrylic paint to carefully present the structure and texture of the iron gate. He also depicts the mottled traces of rust left on it over time, which heightens the realism of the gate. The gate covers the entire canvas, so the regular, parallel, horizontal “abstract lines” are further heightened; the repetitive, orderly layout is simple and absolute. The gate, through exquisite design, thus becomes like the subject of a portrait that can be passed down for generations.
