In Between III— Somewhere

In the middle of this painting, we see an iron fence with three layers superimposed at varying heights. It is set under a starry sky with the Milky Way; some distant mountains are in the background, and the ground in front is paved with tiles, so the iron fence seems to be located in an unknown, mysterious place and waiting silently for someone to discover its existence. Chen Hung-Chun often explores the idea of “the dimensions of temporary space and ephemeral existence” in his creations. On his daily commute, he will always pay attention to the scenery he passes by and the things around him, so he began to focus on the iron fences that can be seen everywhere. These create urban landscapes that exist temporarily, only as long as a construction project takes to complete. However, each time a project is finished, another begins, and the iron sheet reappears, time and time again, and each time this happens, the urban landscape is redivided, creating new “spaces” and “dimensions.” The artist uses his unique perspective to lead the viewer to contemplate the relationships between people and objects, as well as the meaning of existence.
