The artist Li Yu-Chen pays tribute to the Taiwanese photographer Chi Po-Lin, who died in 2017, with this work, From God’s Perspective. The title, meaning “looking down from above,” is actually a proper description of photography, too. This work reflects this perspective, and we can see the brightly colored mountain in the center, with the plants on top of the mountain imbued with brilliant red and golden colors under the sunlight. This is a mountain view at sunrise, with the cloud waterfalls, and the endless sea of clouds forming the kind of natural landscape that attracts the human spirit into it. However, this does not picture a specific place, but is rather a scene of “natural perfection” deliberately created by Li Yu-Chen. From Chi Po-Lin’s famous documentary, Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above, Li Yu-Chen saw how humankind has been destroying nature. Li thus deliberately removed scenes of overexploitation and manmade clutter, and returned all the natural elements to the scene. This is an attempt to reconstruct nature, to make up for things we are really unable to change.
