作品賞析
Artist LI Yu-Chen draws upon her memories and travel experiences as sources of inspiration for her woodcuts. She believes that memory is an accumulation and continuation of time, and when processed by the brain, scenes from our memories lose their realness. Just as the process of creating a woodcut print involves the stacking of colors, images in our memories are likewise repeatedly revised within our brains. In The City Trapped in the Rain, the mountains form part of an autumn landscape scene. Above there’s a gloomy, overcast sky, unlike the bright skies of summer. The mountains are adorned with wisps of cloud, and several small buildings are nestled at the foot of the mountains. It’s a world she created by reimagining her memories. The artist reproduces many images she has never seen in person by simulating personal experience. To her, memories produced by the brain are unreal, as if we’re wandering around at some uncertain place in the greater environment.
