作品賞析
Artist LI Yu-Chen draws upon her memories and travel experiences as sources of inspiration for her woodcuts. She believes that memory is an accumulation and continuation of time, and when processed by the brain, scenes from our memories lose their realness. Just as the process of creating a woodcut print involves the stacking of colors, images in our memories are likewise repeatedly revised within our brains. In Travelling Series I, a road follows the slope of a mountain down into a valley. At the base of the mountain there’s a cluster of small houses, and in the foreground a stretch of grassland hugs the contours of the hills. It’s a world she created by reimagining her memories. The artist reproduces many images she has never seen in person by simulating personal experience. To her, memories produced by the brain are unreal, as if we’re wandering around at some uncertain place in the greater environment.
