WU Cheng-Han uses acrylic paints to recreate the style of traditional artworks and to explore and study natural organisms. Between Flowers depicts Queen of the Night flowers in full bloom against a starry mountain scape. The delicate flowers appear especially brilliant in the night, providing beauteous scenery that hides life threatening danger. A butterfly feeding on nectar is completely unaware of two praying mantises nearby. A patchy and yellowed tone also recreates a sense of aging commonly seen in traditional ink paintings created centuries ago. To WU Cheng-Han, natural organisms obey the rule of the jungle, which also happens to be the modus operandi of the competitive human society.
