LAI Shuai-Cheng uses traditional ink as a media to manifest fantastic ideas. Gluttonous Beast shows a greedy monster that is always looking for food. It has a large mouth, eyes growing out of its head and back, a mass of tendrils sprouting from its chin, and a body covered with tough scales like those of a pangolin. LAI Shuai-Cheng’s biological entities are unique individuals with their own way of thinking and personalities. She integrated smudging and wrinkling techniques of traditional Chinese landscape painting to manifest imaginary ideas and to give these fantastic entities a sense of existence.
