LAI Shuai-Cheng uses traditional ink as a media to manifest fantastic ideas. Backyard Garden is a landscape artwork that depicts an imaginary world of fantasy. The work shows a forest lake that is home to strange plants and flowers as well as uniquely shaped creatures that live comfortably in this habitat. These creatures include flying insects with giant wings as well as reptiles with human limbs and people with antlers that are either swimming or submerged in the lake waters. Traditional Chinese landscape painting techniques were incorporated to physically manifest these elements of fantasy and create an alien world that offers its denizens an imaginary sense of existence.
