LAI Shuai-Cheng’s ink painting work, Joker, illustrates his unique companions from his world of fantasy. These companions are unique and outlandish combinations of other creatures. For example, one of the creatures appears like a kangaroo with a brain-shaped torso and flippers of a sea turtle. Another depicts an eagle’s head with a muscle-bound body that is covered with spikes. There’s also a creature that appears like a sea anemone carried by multiple human legs. As the only unrepeated card within a poker deck, the Joker shares the peculiar appearances of the characters that LAI Shuai-Cheng has created. LAI Shuai-Cheng believes that the Joker also harbors unique ideas and temperament like the strange creatures he had created.
