LAI Shuai-Cheng uses traditional ink as a media to manifest fantastic ideas and create unique creatures, giving these entities an imaginary sense of existence. The Jumping Fish is based upon a story about the sea. Imagination was put to good use to flesh out the organism described in the book, which wore the head of a fish and the body of a human. Ray fins sprout from the creature’s legs, while tendrils emerge from its mouth. Scales are created using traditional smudging and wrinkling techniques. The legs are shown curled as though the creature is getting ready to jump.
