LAI Shuai-Cheng uses traditional ink as a media to manifest fantastic ideas. Clown II is inspired by the Joker card in poker, depicting various forms of organisms that include a face filled with tongues, a miniscule person with a huge blob on its head, a creature with only two legs and nothing else, a girl with a rabbit’s head, and an alien organism that resembles a jellyfish. Like the Joker of a poker card set, these characters are not repeated in anyway, and each has its own way of thinking and set of personalities. LAI Shuai-Cheng integrated smudging and wrinkling techniques of traditional Chinese landscape painting to manifest imaginary ideas and to give these fantastic entities a sense of existence.
