Artist SHEU Jer-Yu likes to construct real-life social stories with computer graphics. The inspiration for November 11th, 1970 stems from the erection of a bronze statue in Taichung Park back in 1970. Sheu had not been born yet, so he didn’t witness the event, but by gathering newspaper reports from that time he attempts to recreate the incident using his imagination. Taichung Park is the setting for the story shown in this piece, and text from newspaper reports serve as captions at the end. He carefully creates a male character who engages in repeated actions, drawing the viewer’s visual focus and building a bizarre atmosphere. Using computer graphics techniques, Sheu simulates the event as reported in the news. And by de-emphasizing the realism of the incident, he produces images that belong neither to the past nor the present.
