Artist SHEU Jer-Yu likes to capture places in our everyday lives through the camera. Then by adding words and symbols, he provokes the viewer’s thoughts about symbols, images and reality. In Gas Station, he projects the phrase “gas station” and its definition onto a photograph of a gas station at night. This juxtaposition of words and real image gives an unusual effect. It’s certainly possible to understand the subject of an image directly without the addition of words, but in this work, the projected words prompt the viewer to form a specific interpretation. In this piece, Hsu examines the process of viewer’s comprehension of the reality and objectivity of words and images.
