The Island

Artist LIAO Wen-Hao derives creative nourishment from the paintings of great artists over the centuries, transforming the scenes he sees in art books by incorporating humorous combinations of humans and animals. In his painting The Island, a semi-abstract human figure formed from a mountain reclines in a traditional landscape scene. The upper half of the body consists of crags and white trees, and a rushing river flows past an extended leg, making the entire figure an integral part of the mountain-and-river scene and building an ethereal, poetic sense of liberation far from the mundane world. The artist makes use of modern techniques to imitate the human spirit of traditional landscape paintings, using painting as a means to free himself from life’s shackles and pursue liberation and peace of mind.
