Artist LIAO Wen-Hao derives creative nourishment from the paintings of great artists over the centuries, transforming the scenes he sees in art books by incorporating humorous combinations of humans and animals. In his painting titled Soaking in a Spring, two wandering mountain men relax in a hot spring far away from the mundane world. With bodies resembling pine trees growing from rocks, they seem removed from this world. The scene presents a vision of a return to spiritual sustenance. The artist makes use of modern techniques to imitate the human spirit of traditional landscape paintings, using painting as a means to free himself from life’s shackles and pursue liberation and peace of mind.
