The subject of this piece by CHIU Jin-Ping is the ironworks that her father ran for over 20 years, which faced the fate of its eventual closing. Using pieces of scrap iron showing the marks of age, she recalls the historic memories behind these objects. In Flashback to an Old Era – Pointillist Poetry II, Chiu pieces iron scraps together onto a composition of chiefly blacks, grays and whites layered on top of each other as if stacking scenes from her memories onto the picture. In this piece, Chiu seeks to relive memories of growing up in the ironworks: the rusty, corroded surfaces of the iron objects represent the passage of time, as she searches for fond memories amid the grief of the factory’s closure.
