Artwork Appreciation
For three years, YANG Shun-Fa observed the ecological and environmental issues faced by the coastal areas in Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan in Taiwan through photographic filming. In the work, The Submerged Beauty of Formosa-Chenglong, Kouhu Township, Yunlin County, a wetland was originally used for farming. However, the low terrain and long-term groundwater overdraft have caused land subsidence. Several typhoon attacks have also caused the seawater to flood the agricultural land, submerging temple of the village god and ancestral graves. The long-term accumulation of water in this area has made the land unable to be cultivated, and along with the environmental changes, result in this current wetland landscape. YANG Shun-Fa presents a poetic scenery in a form of an ellipse, much like a classical literati painting. However, this picturesque scenery is actually the tragic situation after the destruction of land.
