Artwork Appreciation
CHANG Liang-I uses photography to capture various images of Taiwanese society. Evening Prayer-1 depicts an odd phenomenon where Taiwanese people are unable to part with their cellphones in the highly developed era of information. The picture shows night descending on a serene coastline, shrouding the area in darkness with only pale flickers of light emanating from the faraway horizon. Instead of admiring the beautiful coastline and the descent of the night, people visiting the coasts decided to head to a corner, focus on their cellphones, and play their games. Contrasted against the bright cellphone screen shining on the people’s faces are the white, lapping waves and grasses swaying with the breeze. The photography documents the strange sights of the modern times, highlighting the isolation and loneliness that people experience in a time with advanced technologies and communications.
