Artwork Appreciation
CHANG Liang-I uses photography to capture various images of society. Night Flower is a photograph of a town at night that captures a moment in the lives of ordinary Japanese people. The roads are devoid of cars and pedestrians, while the windows of residences and roadside lighting give off a dusky glow. Brilliant fireworks erupt in the black sky while a family gathers to jointly admire the pyrotechnic display in the summer night. The children are seen jumping up and down, cheering on excitedly as they witness the beauty of the fireworks. The vibrant display is contrasted against the empty streets, highlighting the sense of isolation while conveying issues of emigration in small towns of Japan.
