Artwork Appreciation
CHEN Jian-Rong is fond of depicting imagined cityscapes. Acrylic paints are his primary medium, through which he conjures up structural spaces with paintbrush and ruler and develops unique abstract scenes.
In Landscape 34, the artist sketches the exterior of a building with the orderly lines of a blueprint, and then applies large, layered blocks of color. Dripping paint destroys the boundaries between the lines and colors, creating a visual impact.
Chen’s creative work gives the viewer a sense of uncertainty. In an unembellished style, he purposely layers lines and colors to put the piece in a seemingly complete yet uncompleted state, thereby conveying his anxious feelings of uncertainty amid an environment in space and time that is full of change.
