Artwork Appreciation
CHEN Chien-Jung’s works are highly structured, with sharp lines and well-defined color patches, creating a unique view of modern urban construction. Landscape 75 created an architectural space viewed with a three-dimensional perspective by using straight, rigid black lines upon the canvas. Repeated strokes add to the sense of incompletion, uncertainty, and variance of the composition. The right side of the painting was dominated by horizontal strokes going back and forth to create a large area of overlapping blue and black patches, forming a powerful contrast between the virtual and physical elements as well as static and dynamic sensations. Through this work, the artist has created a dialog between emotion and reason, conveying his reflections on the rapid destruction of the modern value system.
