Artwork Appreciation
CHEN Shiau-Peng mainly uses painting and print as his artistic devices, generating various works that include both texts and installation artworks. In recent years, CHEN Shiau-Peng studied the use of puzzles and tangrams to generate artworks that are based upon living experiences in different cities in order to investigate and reflect upon events and encounters at specific time and locations. My Brooklyn II – The Heart of Darkness illustrates the artist’s recent one-month stay at Brooklyn, New York. The work reignites the memories that the artist had experienced, such as the street blocks that he had visited, the roles he once played, and the friendships he once had. With this simplistic and transforming imagery, CHEN Shiau-Peng re-interprets the meaning of abstract presentation where it is no longer a purely rational approach to art, but includes living experiences as well.
