Artwork Appreciation
As an artist, Hsu Yun-Shan believes that every basic element in painting, such as color, line, brushstroke, light and shadow, texture, dynamic, and so on, is worth studying and experimenting with. Through constant deconstruction, adjustment, and exploration, these elements can take on an infinite variety of appearances and generate new relationships in accordance with one’s own imagination and interpretation. In Untitled No. 213, Hsu Yun-Shan adds colors to her brushstrokes, using brushes of identical size and varying the weight and speed of the brushstrokes to bring out the combined power of lines of differing force or rigidity. The orderly arrangement of the strokes imparts a sense of fluid rhythm to the composition as a whole. Thin, elegant tonalities contrast with the blacker brushstrokes, adding different levels of lightness. Through the rhythm of colors and brushstrokes, we can experience the artist’s somatic perception and inner touch at the moment of creating the work and sense the pure world of her imagination.
