Artwork Appreciation
In Happy Planet – Satellite No. 6 (Candy Phonograph), artist HUANG Bo-Xun builds abstract, flower-like patterns from thin, translucent layers of acrylic paint. The candy-like pastel colors seem to recall fond life memories.
Looking closely, you will find that Huang uses layering of pigments and changing contrasts to create a computer graphics like effect. Huang makes full use of the glossy plastic-film sheen that acrylic takes on after drying, which is completely different from the moist richness of oil paint.
By exploring the rich possibilities of acrylic, Huang invites the viewer to ponder the differences between realism and imagination in visual imagery.
