Artist Huang Chih Cheng works with metal foil and uses mixed media such as ink, cotton thread, and images. His work, Refraction, shows two distinct takes on a shirt, featuring the white shirt worn by the artist’s father, who worked for Taiwan Railway for forty years. Huang remembers a row of identical white shirts often hanging on the clothesline at home. Besides work, his father also wore white shirts to weddings, his graduation, and even when traveling, as if to declare that his career and life were inseparable. The two shirts in Refraction are depicted in different states: fluttering in the wind while drying, and straightened after ironing, like the shirts his father wore at work, yet left to wrinkle freely on weekends. A closer look reveals bird symbols embedded within the shirts, echoing his father's post-retirement hobby of photographing birds. The white shirts reflect various aspects of his father’s identity as he transitioned through different roles.
