Artist Tsai Kuen-Lin appropriates the visual concepts of landscape painting in his “ Travelogue ” series of woodcut prints. Focusing on the “mountain” theme, he painted local scenery or historical sites revolving around mountains on different wooden boards, and finally made the entire set of woodblock prints into wide, large-scale works through printing. His Shihmen Town was created with a stencil from part of the woodblock print from Mt. Datun in the “ Travelogue ” series for the screen printing. It depicts the scenery of the Shimen area on the north coast, the Temple of the Eighteen Princes, and the nuclear power plant. The artist used golden ink to highlight scenes or events that he believed were related to “interests, power, and conflict.” Tsai Kuen-Lin cleverly used made each set of the “ Travelogue ” blocks into sculptures, which became his “Mountains” series, thereby extending the possibilities of woodcut prints.
