The artist Cai Kunlin has a wealth of international residency experience. Through his exploration and keen observation of his surroundings, he is always able to reflect his discoveries and understanding of different cultures, societies, and natural environments through his creations. Akiyoshi Stage was made during his residence in Akiyoshidai, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan in 2016. The Akiyoshidai International Art Village is located in the deep mountains, allowing artists to stay away from the urban hustle and bustle and feel the natural environment of the north country’s frigid climate. In this video, a large floor-to-ceiling window in one of the living quarters of Akiyoshidai is used as a stage. As time moves on, we see changes in appearance of the scenery outside, depending on the time of day or angle of light, and it is accompanied by deconstructed Noh music, which adds to the poetry of the work. The new viewing frame opens up countless windows of the imagination, allowing viewers to obtain different feelings and perspectives in familiar, daily situations.
