Artist Lin Yi-Lung will transform the image fragments and sensory information in his memory into various living things with fantastic appearances. This etching, The Rainbow Basin (In the Day), has two versions; the other is for the night. He transferred the etched copper plate with special golden ink to white and black paper respectively, for day and night versions of the same scene, with different moods. The flora and fauna in the painting are transformed, fantastic creatures that exist only in the artist’s imagination. Seven beams of light penetrate from outside the frame, after passing through what appears to be a dispersive prism, are focused on the mysterious animal in the center; but conversely, these beams of light also seem to be diverging from the creature to its surroundings. The picture is composed of a large number of delicate and complicated lines, which look very gorgeous, and it is difficult to judge the true direction of the light, which adds an atmosphere of fantasy to the whole composition.
