In Composition of a Garden, artist Hung Hsuan draws potted plants in plastic bags from an overhead perspective, reflecting from inner and outer spaces on the state of organic life being restricted to a certain area. The transparent white branches represent growth and contrast with the dark soil. The hollow cylindrical flower stand not only supports the plants, but also limits their living range. Therefore, fluorescent colors are specially used to emphasize the texture of the plastic flower stand. Hung Hsuan used silk as the base material for the painting and mounted the work on transparent acrylic in order to show the transparency of the plastic bag and transform the plastic bags’ pattern into the background. The red prints on the plastic bags may be auspicious flowers such as hibiscus, peonies, and roses, all of which have beautiful meanings. The load-bearing labels printed on the bags have also been retained, reminding viewers how these beautiful patterns are closely linked to daily life.
