The artist Hong Xuan finds different possibilities in contemporary calligraphy and ink through trial and experimentation. In Touming Magazine (touming means “transparent”), the center blank space is a result of rubbing silk over a clear acrylic sheet. On the one hand, the translucent texture of the silk itself is used to make the picture appear visually hazy; on the other hand, the texture and primary color of the silk are used to form an open field and create an interactive dialogue with the surrounding pictures. Hung Hsuan uses a fluorescent yellow outline to simulate the sense of speed as the pages of a book are flipped through, and in the surrounding background, comic storyboards fill in the gaps left by the magazine. Every frame is like her diary, written as a response to her everyday life, and the stories are connected with each other. However, the blank dialogue boxes leave space for viewers to insert their own imaginations.
