Artist Chou Cheng-Liang’s paintings often depict vibrant flowers and forests. Inspired by more than ten years of pastoral life in Miaoli, he drew this work, Fruit and Flower Mountain, to show the relationship between humans and nature. Chou Cheng-Liang uses delicate ink outlining followed by light color, with each stroke weaving together the outlines of plants and the changing terrain. He flattened the rural scenery, with the composition spreading and growing upward like plants, while traces of human life remain in the dense woods. The father and son figures taking care of the trees in the foreground reflect his past life. Following the white path that winds up and runs through the picture, the end is a house and the sky in the distance. The flying white crane hints at the infinity of space, guiding the viewer to see that the pastoral landscape in front of them can continue to extend farther beyond.
