With a plain yet delicate tone, artist JHOU Cheng-Liang paints an ideal realm where man and nature coexist. In Mountain City by the Water 1103, there’s a city atop a forested island. The city is in a stage of fast growth: several big construction projects are underway. Beneath the city, a lone inhabitant paddles his boat on a slow-flowing river. In the foreground, a truck laden with goods is driving to its next destination. JHOU’s work presents a cozy, idyllic scene, delightful and meaningful. But here the artist attempts to convey a contradictory aspect of human nature: we may yearn for the rural life, but we’re unwilling to give up the conveniences of modern civilization.
