Chou Cheng-Liang’s After the Rain Comes Sunshine is inspired by Lion Mountain in Miaoli. A compositional arrangement like that of traditional landscape paintings is used to depict the kind of scenery that often appears in Taiwan’s valleys. A stream runs through the center of the picture, among damp rocks, and a trail to the mountains is hidden in dense woods on its left. At the beginning of the trail to the mountains, there is an archway, with steps winding upward behind it. On the flatter road to the right, two figures walk slowly up into the distance. Since the painting depicts a forest just after rain, the artist enhances the light-dark contrast in the lower left and clearly outlines the patterns of leaves on the trees, thereby expressing their freshness. The color is an almost pure, emerald green. Through such meticulous brushwork and close attention to color, light, and shadow changes, Chou Cheng-Liang brings the forest’s vitality as well as his appreciation for nature before our eyes.
