With a plain yet delicate tone, artist JHOU Cheng-Liang paints an ideal realm where man and nature coexist. In Utopia, cities are built on a series of elevated islands. A river flows gently past these separate urban islands, providing a life source bearing and linking human emotions. Cars move back and forth on the interconnecting bridges and white smoke billows nonstop from smokestacks, filling the scene with activity. Jhou’s work presents a cozy, idyllic scene, delightful and meaningful. But here the artist attempts to convey a contradictory aspect of human nature: we may yearn for the rural life, but we’re unwilling to give up the conveniences of modern civilization.
