Walking in the Hidden Lake

The artist, Chou Cheng-Liang, is very good at depicting landscapes and often draws his materials from his own natural surroundings. Walking around the Hidden Lake depicts one of the places where he often walks. Following the rays of the sun, the painting is divided into two areas, a dark green forest in the foreground and a lighter-colored view of mountains in the background. The two areas make a strong contrast. In the dense foliage of the foreground, Chou deliberately does not outline the details of the leaves, but rather uses the variation of light and dark in green blocks that blend together in order to capture the trees’ appearance. For the mountains in the background, he uses larger color blocks to express the trees and make the scene appear to be covered by a thin mist. He uses brighter colors to lightly outline the foliage and create a three-dimensional effect, but still maintains the hazy, misty texture. Walking around the Hidden Lake records scenery familiar to the artist, as well as the inspiring moments imparted to him through its subtle changes over time.
