The inspiration for the artist Chou Cheng-Liang’s work comes from the artist’s experience of watching a play in the Lin Family Garden in Wufeng. A line in the performance, “May you have good days like this every year!” coupled with the theater site, made him feel as if in a fantasy, so he created this work, which weaves time and space together. In the past, there was a lake inside the large family compound, he deliberately placed the lake at the center of this scene, and then arranged the various natural scenic elements and architectural landmarks around it. In the distance are Mt. Jiujiu and the Central Mountain Range; on the right is the now-demolished Tianwaitian Theater; and at the center is a grand house in the traditional Southern Fujian architectural style, with its courtyard stage deliberately elevated, so that the traveler with a backpack on the other side of the lake can see it. On the left, one sees the old Taichung Train Station, with its mix of old and new architectural styles. Throughout this night scene, where time and space are all intermixed, nature is juxtaposed with the so-called “second nature”—architecture—while at the same time, the harmonious beauty of the two is also presented.
