This work comes from the series “The City without Railway.” Artist Tsai Meng-Chang walked through the demolition site of the eastward relocation of the Tainan Railway, using his camera to record demolished buildings and their remnants. Human figures never appear in Tsai’s works, but what he wants to explore through his art ultimately returns to the issue of “people’s positions and roles when settling down in cities.” After this house was demolished, only the walls remained. Tsai Meng-Chang used delicate brushwork to paint the traces of demolition exposed on the walls. The dark green steel-grid contractors’ fences and red warning lights in the foreground clearly define the scope of the restricted area. The artist believes that the Railway Grade-Separation Project is an important part of urban modernization, and that it creates a huge change in the urban landscape. Although the aim of the policy is to build a better future for the city, people often fail to see the price or sacrifice required behind it.
