When artist Tsai Meng-Chang was collecting materials for his “The City without Railway” series and focusing on the issue of railway demolition, he suddenly discovered that many of these forgotten urban buildings or ancient houses were filled with amazingly thriving plants. This work depicts a banana tree growing next to a railway. Tsai used a sense of closeness when composing the banana leaves, allowing the visual focus to fall on a few concave leaves in the center. The sunlight penetrating the leaves and the play of light and shadow between them are vividly depicted. Along the periphery of the painting, the outlines of the leaves are deliberately blurred, and a few leaves in the upper right corner are completely out of focus. The entire work seems to be captured through a fixed-focus lens. No one can predict where these plants will go now as a result of the railway relocation project. However, the plants the artist depicted are still being bathed in eternal sunlight today.
