TSAI Meng-Chang often uses objects and events from everyday life and his surroundings as his creative inspiration and themes. Factories constructed using corrugated metal sheets, ship containers in port, and horizons dominated by chimney stacks are part of the major theme of his works. Up North presents an extremely familiar landscape of Taiwanese urban buildings and streets. Roof constructions of rusting corrugated metal sheets, cold, unfeeling aluminum window grilles, disorganized hanging wires, cables, and air conditioning units mounted on the building wall provide a realistic depiction of the everyday life in overcrowded cities that often feature cramped living quarters, busy schedules, and cold isolation. TSAI Meng-Chang illustrates facets of urban life for the purpose of identifying personal solace and means of making a living.
