TSAI Meng-Chang often uses objects and events from everyday life and his surroundings as his creative inspiration and themes. Factories constructed using corrugated metal sheets, ship containers in port, and horizons dominated by chimney stacks are part of the major theme of his works. The Village across Street depicts an urban apartment complex. The composition is a photo-realistic presentation of a tattered wall surface against which a disorganized arrangement of air conditioning units and pipelines are mounted. Rustic villages in the suburbs have been replaced by the ordered structure of city apartment blocks and living spaces, providing convenience while isolating people from each other. TSAI Meng-Chang illustrates facets of urban life for the purpose of identifying personal solace and means of making a living.
