Now that we have advanced photo-editing software, photographs can no longer be equated with reality. The artist Lin Hung-Hsin uses the “Overabundance” series to explore “What is reality?” In Overabundance 02, he no longer tries to copy the likeness of real flowers, but rather processes their digital images, with color-correction and retouching. He creates a flat image with even brushstrokes, then paints the flowers in soft, blurry focus, first by imitating the effect of a camera filter and soft focus, and second by reversing the standard “clear focus in foreground, with a blurry background” emphasis found in traditional painting. He uses depth of color to create depth of field: gray-green flowers express the distant view, and bright pink flowers express the foreground. The vertical lines in the background and the edges of the petals with hollowed-out colors symbolize what happens when the CPU and image processor are too inefficient during computer drawing, and the image cannot run properly.
