The artist Lin Hongxin’s “Simple Composition” series rethinks the reality and illusion behind images. Although paintings in the past were vehicles for imitating and representing nature, he believes that digital media have changed our ways of seeing. Retouching and post-production have become the norm, and these processed objects are far from reality. In Simple Composition IV, the left half of the painting shows mainly paper airplanes, and through the variations in their perspective, structure, light, and shade, he conveys the idea of their weight and position in space. It shows the thought of “creating a virtual three-dimensional sense on a flat plane.” The red flowers and green wallpaper on the right half of the work are the result of the artist’s attempt, with paper tape and scraper, to reproduce the effect of flattening three-dimensional mental images. The red Chinese hibiscus flowers and green wallpaper on the right half of the work are the result of the artist trying to reproduce the three-dimensional image plane in the brain through paper tape and scraper. Another way to view and appreciate the painting is by seeing the contrast between the virtual and the real on the left and right sides of the canvas as a kind of interesting dialogue.
