After Lin Hung-Shin started teaching basic-level painting courses, he created a series of “Simple Compositions” using basic elements of painting such as points, lines, surfaces, compositional arrangement, and brushstrokes. Using an experimental method, he disassembles the creative act into several stages. In Simple Composition III, he folded several sheets of paper into geometric shapes mimicking paper airplanes. Then, through photography, compositing, and retouching, the figures were separated from their original reality. Finally, the “camouflage” and “fabrications” are depicted on the canvas. Thus, the paper airplanes in the grey space appear to glide in air, showing a three-dimensional effect but simply painted with invisible brushstrokes. In the lower part of the painting, there are horizontal bands in two shades of red. For these, the artist mixed red pigments with concrete primer and then painted them flat, thus giving these flat bands a three-dimensional concave-convex effect. The contrast between virtual and real, the connection between the colors and lines, and the positional relationships among the objects in the space all achieve an ingenious balance, so that diverse possibilities unfold beyond the painting frame.
