作品賞析
In Leaves, the artist Lee Chi-Hsiang used oil paint to depict plants under afternoon sunlight, but seen through translucent patterned glass, which acts like a filter. The colors and shadows still change as usual under the sun, but the plants can no longer be depicted in the fully realistic way that he had striven for in the past. Now he focuses instead on the sense of space created by the plants. The large whitish area in the upper half of the picture shows the effect of diffuse light, while the two lower corners are black, deep in shadow. The branches and leaves of various plants twine together like paths in a forest, which leads the viewer unconsciously to direct the gaze further into the space behind the glass. Lee Chi-Hsiang began depicting plants through a hazy perspective once he felt influenced by a shift in his thinking, and he no longer strives for photographic realism—even the title of the work, Leaves, is sufficient for referring to all of the plants in this work.
