LEE Chi-Hsiang’s oil paintings investigate the relationship between images and the act of viewing. TV Sunset features a TV broadcast viewed through a piece of textured glass that unevenly blurs the broadcast image, disrupting the original image with its well-defined color patches. LEE Chi-Hsiang uses a realist technique of oil paintings to meticulously capture the lights, shadows, and patterns of the textured glass as well as the effects when viewing a broadcast image through the glass, thereby creating a visual vocabulary between blurriness and sharpness and between reality and virtual elements. Oil painting recreates a visual landscape viewed through textured glass to convey the sense of contradiction when an actual object is placed together with a digital image.
