Depicting “realistic scenes behind patterned glass” has always been a feature of artist Lee Chi-Hsiang’s works. However, as his thinking changed, he also began changing the way he viewed things in the works, and he abandoned the precise realism he had pursued in the past. In Transparent White, he depicted a scene through a screen window instead of patterned glass. The plants seen through a screen window thus have a hazy, slightly out-of-focus feeling. Lee Chi-Hsiang first outlined the mesh of the screen with delicate brushstrokes, and then used paint bit-by-bit to fill the gaps, gradually building up the shapes of plants. The black areas are plant shadows, while the white areas are white flowers reflecting the sunlight through the screen; they seem like parts of an overexposed photograph. This is the origin of the title, Transparent White.
