Portrait Between Borders I

Simon Chang, an artist living in Slovenia, traveled to Slovenia’s borders with Austria and Croatia when the refugee crisis broke out in Europe in 2015. He recorded the refugees’ experiences and published a photo anthology, Fleeing from the Dark Side of the Moon, in 2017. Through photos and text, Fleeing records this dark moment of time, which Europe still has difficulty facing—even if something is invisible, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. While shooting Portrait between Borders 1, Simon Chang and the refugees lived through nights of minus 10 degrees, living in a messy environment, sharing each other’s life stories—at which point, the refugees are no longer just numbers in the news, but have become people like us, and it is truly heartwarming. Simon Chang, himself an immigrant to Europe, saw himself in the refugees. Apart from the differences in nationality and situation, when he confronts various forms of injustice and inhumanity, he seeks even more to highlight the fact that we all share the same human nature.
